Why Playing it Safe in Poker is Dangerous
There are many ways that you can win in Poker, but you don't do it by being careless. Every play must be thought out and carefully evaluated. That being the case however, you shouldn't be averse to taking chances.
Sitting back in your chair waiting for something good to happen to you doesn't work in life, and neither at the Poker table.
This may be stating the obvious, but no matter what kind of Poker strategy you have, it will not be fool proof. No matter how well you know the odds, or how carefully you read the opponent, there is, and will always be an element of risk in the game.
Suppose you get TT and you raise and re raise pre flop. Most will fold, but some call. If you go to the flop, there is the chance that you will get a three of a kind, or you could end up being out flopped by a higher pair or a two pair. But does that mean you just fold your hand? No, you play on.
You can't win in Poker by just playing safe hands, because, no matter what the odds may be, all hands in the game can be potentially troublesome. Even an AA can be cracked by a 54 with the right kind of flop. But you cannot go into the hand thinking this will be the case. If you miss the flop, it doesn't necessarily mean that your opponent hit.
In simple terms, if you play the game, your Poker strategy must consider the fact that you will face trouble. Even if you try to avoid, trouble will find you, like when the blinds start to go up.
So instead of playing it safe, you should analyze the situation carefully and make the best decisions based on what you know and what you think is best. Sitting on the sidelines and picking up a few chips here and there may work, but only for a certain period, and in most instances, the pathetic amount you will win will be outstripped by the blinds you lose.
Play Poker knowing that there is risk involved, but at the time you do your best to reduce its potential damage by playing sensibly and in a mathematically correct manner. Facing the potential threats in the game, armed with the proper mindset, is always the better and more beneficial option.
