Playing the Turn and River in Limit Holdem
Regardless if it is Texas Holdem or Omaha Holdem, the fact is that everything will be decided at most times, at the turn and river. If you want to win regularly at Limit Holdem, then knowing how to play these cards is crucial.
The first thing that you will see when playing the turn is that a lot of the players who were calling and raising in the early rounds will fold. The reason is that it is at this stage in Limit Holdem that the wagers are doubled, making it more costly to call or raise.
It is therefore important that your Limit Holdem strategy includes folding as an option too. If you are holding a weak hand that does not improve by the turn, and you suspect that the other players on the table have strong cards, then you should fold before it becomes an expensive loss.
Supposing you are holding a pair of JJ and the board has Q, 7, A and 5. The best that your Limit Holdem strategy can produce would be a set, but that can easily be offset by a QQQ, AAA or a straight. If the board is loaded with suited cards and someone on the table has a suited pair, then a flush will also beat you.
Of course if you are holding AAs instead of JJs, then you may want to play here, or at least check to see what the other Limit Holdem players have. You have the top set and provided that the board is not suited or no signs of open ended straights then you will probably win.
Your Limit Holdem strategy for playing the river is somewhat different, in that in most cases you should play to the end. In the first place, one should never play to this point without a strong hand, because the bets are expensive.
There are those who are willing to bluff all the way to the river, or at least go there with a middle pair. The hope is that with an Ace or a face card on the board, one will be able, through bluffing, take other players out of the pot. Of course if someone raises, then you are in trouble.
In a lot of cases, playing the turn and river in Limit Holdem necessitates a strong hand. You should always try to play it in such a way because you need to be aggressive. There are other ways to play at this late stage, but the abovementioned scenarios and situations are the most reliable.
Playing Limit Holdem requires that you have the cards, but also the mental fortitude to play to the end. A lot of players simply fold under the pressure. By knowing what kinds of cards you have you will be more composed and be able to make the right moves
