Comparative of Chess and Poker

Poker, as we all may know now, is a game that can be likened to chess. You will be somehow amazes at the things poker and chess have in common. Even though you may not think of it a lot, they do share some attributes common to each other, and here are they:

First and foremost, chess and poker are games that require analytical skills. In chess, there's such a thing as "five moves ahead", which means players are trained to think of what they will do not only at the present situation but also the turns that will follow it. Likewise, in poker, poker players are expected to think of every possible situation that may come out at each round of betting. They must have a game plan. That's why poker players are used to computing the outs; they compute the chances of what will happen next so that they know what to do right now. Also, in poker, players should be skilled in analyzing not only the cards and the turns, but their opponents as well.

Second, chess and poker can be played passively or aggressively. Of course, you will choose whichever of the two you think is more suitable to use in each situation. You cannot play aggressively all throughout the game, or passively all throughout, unless you want to be predictable. In chess, players play passively, but actually they usually do this when they are setting up a trap. In poker, a passive player, also known as loose player, is the one who always calls or checks, never raises. You may choose to appear loose by playing passive so that your opponents think that you are a "safe" player because of the way you bet. After gaining their trust, you can now bluff them by raising even though you have a terrible hand.

Third, chess and poker are not exciting games, never monotonous or boring. They are both situational games and your move largely depends on your opponent's move, and vice versa. Because of this, every poker or chess game is different from one another, especially when you play with different people.

Lastly, both chess and poker instill discipline. You only have yourself to rely on, and only yourself to blame if you lose. That means, you become more and more responsible and disciplined, because you know that there will be nobody else who will save your neck.
